Obstetric violence

Violence and aggression are also obstetrical.

During the Kristeller maneuver, physical pressure is exerted on the uterine fundus, more specifically toward the pelvic floor, during the second stage of labor. It is usually done when the baby’s head is already visible, allegedly when the woman is not yet able to give birth on her own. The main goal is to complete the birthing process quickly.

The World Health Organization has recognized this method as unacceptable, placing it on the list of obstetric aggressions in special reports of the United Nations and other international organizations.

In most developed countries, the use of the Kristeller method is prohibited. But alas, today some birth professionals still use this maneuver.

Possible complications of the method include:

For the baby:

  • formation of curvatures in the cervical vertebrae and the base of the skull bruises
  • hematomas
  • intracranial bleeding, central nervous system disorder
  • hypoxia
  • death

For the mother:

  • uterine rupture
  • vaginal tears
  • placental abruption
  • internal bleeding
  • liver damage
  • fractured ribs
  • death

A woman is most vulnerable during childbirth when she is unaware of which interventions are recommended or not. You should choose a doctor whom you can fully trust and plan your safe delivery.

Have a support person present during the birth: for example, a doula, husband, mother, or sister, who is aware of your ideal birth plan.
